The Challenge:
The existing 1970s concrete expanse was cracked, hot in summer, sterile, and unfriendly. The city required a durable, low-maintenance, and aesthetically uplifting solution that encouraged community gathering.
The Solution: A Cobblestone Tapestry
Designers created a "tapestry" underfoot using beige slate cobblestones in two sizes.
Large Cobbles (Pitchers): Formed the main body of the plaza in a sweeping circular fan pattern that directed movement toward a new central fountain.
Small Cobbles (Settes): Were used to create intricate border bands and medallions featuring the city's crest, adding a layer of historical detail.
Dry-Laid over a Permeable Base: The entire system was installed over a modern, reinforced permeable sub-base, allowing rainwater to recharge the groundwater and eliminating runoff issues.
The Result:
Aesthetic: The warm beige tones transformed the space from cold to welcoming. The irregular stone surface created beautiful light and shadow play.
Functional: The permeable system solved chronic drainage problems. The durable slate withstood daily public use and winter salting without damage.
Community Impact: The plaza became a destination, increasing foot traffic for local businesses and hosting weekly markets. The natural, tactile material made the space feel human-scaled and cared for.
